#1 -Engineering Question

“Hi Asad, I was working on RADAR level Transmitter, and I came across this feature called

Dynamic vapor compensation. (DVP)

What does this mean ? and what is the use of this feature ?

I am confused ? it is something related to steam ?

can you please help.

Thanks in advance. “

Answer:

Dynamic Vapor Compensation

It is a cool feature in the Rosemount 5300 Series GWR

It compensates for vapor space dielectric in steamy applications.

👉 Why is this required ?

Imagine you're trying to measure the level of water in a pot by looking at the water level inside the pot.

But there's steam coming out of it.

This steam can interfere (With your vision).

And you will not get a correct idea of the level inside the pot.

Similarly,

In industrial applications.

High pressure steam can cause errors in level measurement.

So we need to Compensate for this.

The compensation occurs in the transmitter electronics.

And a corrected level measurement is provided to the control system.

How does dynamic vapor compensation work?

It works by using a target at a fixed distance.

With this target,

The vapor dielectric is measured continuously.

The transmitter knows where the reflector pulse should have been if there were no vapor present.

However,

Since there is vapor in the tank, the reflector pulse appears beyond the actual reflector point.

The distance between the actual reflector point and the apparent reflector point is used to calculate the vapor dielectric.

The calculated dielectric is then dynamically used to compensate for vapor dielectric changes and eliminates the need to do any compensation in the control system.

When to use DVP ?

Full benefits of using DVP are achieved for pressures exceeding 247 psia (17 bar)

What if I dont use it ?

As an uncompensated steam-induced error becomes as large as 3.4% or more.

In a Boilers this is super dangerous.

And Boilers Exploding is not new to the industry.

Quick Summary

Dynamic Vapor Compensation is like a smart calculator that automatically adjusts for steam interference.

Thus, giving you an accurate level measurement in high-pressure steam applications.

It's a cool feature that ensures accuracy and reliability in industrial applications.

#2- Engineering Standard

👉 ASME PTC 19.3 Standard

The basic concept is that the frequency of vibrations produced due to vortex shedding phenomenon must not be equal to the natural installed frequency of the thermowell.

The Ratio of Vortex Shedding frequency / Thermowell Resonant Frequency is called frequency ratio.

Now to pass the Wake frequency calculation the thermowell should pass 2 Criteria.

(🔴) Criteria 1 : The Frequency Ratio should be less than 0.8

(🔴) Criteria 2 : The Frequency Ratio should not be in the range of 0.4 to 0.6

If you are interested to learn in depth, why this frequency range of 0.8, 0.4 and 0.6 were developed.

Then I have made a FREE Guide in PDF format for you to learn ASME PTC 19.3 standard in depth.

#3 -Career Tip

10 Years of Silence

Hayes wanted to know GENIUS are born that way.

Or they are built.

Hayes started his research by examining successful composers.

He analyzed thousands of musical pieces created between 1685 and 1900 and developed a list of 500 popular pieces considered to be the “masterworks” in the field.

Hayes mapped out the timeline of each composer’s career.

He discovered that virtually every single “masterwork” was written after year ten of the composer’s career constant efforts.

This led him to refer to the period of hard work and little recognition as the “ten years of silence.”

You can take the same approach to your work, to your goals, and to your legacy.

On a daily basis, this doesn’t have to look big or impressive.

What looks like little pay and no recognition is often the price you have to pay to become the best in your field.

Thankfully, just one hour of focus and deliberate practice each day can deliver incredible results over the long–run.
